Community Grants is a new programme which aims to support small voluntary and community organisations to engage with local communities and deliver a range of skills and employment support activities, through the provision of grants up to £12,000.
The grants aim to support a quality outreach provision, providing an essential stepping stone for unemployed and economically inactive participants to find employment or progress to further learning.
The ESF Community Grants programme builds on the Global Grants programme (known as Fast Forward Grants in London), which was one of the key features of the last regional ESF Objective 3 programme.
Funded by the London Development Agency and the European Social Fund, the application round was launched on 23rd October 2008. There will also be a number of workshops in the coming weeks.
visit www.gle.co.uk/services/communitygrants for details of these workshops and how to apply or contact Mark Pudge at CITY.COMM.

The Government has recently launched its £130m Grassroots Grants scheme to benefit small local voluntary and community groups, and CITY.COMM is working in partnership with the St Katharine & Shadwell Trust (the Community Foundation covering the City) to distribute about £8,800 over the next three years.
Who can apply?
This funding is only for small not-for-profit third sector voluntary or community groups based in the City of London.
Groups must: • have been active in the community since at least December 2006 • have an average annual income of less than £20,000 over the last three years • be volunteer led • be connected with and / or meeting the needs of the community • have a governing document (e.g. constitution) and bank account
(There is a Grassroots Grants fund for each borough. We are working in partnership with Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets so can also help with information if you are based in these neighbouring boroughs.)
What can I apply for?
Grants can be between £250 and £5,000 (although bear in mind that there is a total fund for the City of about £8,800 for the next three years).
You can apply more than once, up to the maximum of £5,000 over the three years.
Grants can be for a wide range of projects and activities that strengthen communities, bring people from different backgrounds together, strengthen your organisation’s capacity, or respond to local need. There are more details and some examples in the Guidance Notes that accompany the Application Form.
How do I apply?
Reply to this email, or contact CITY.COMM on 020 7535 0471 to request an Application Form.
The application process is intended to be straightforward, with a quick turnaround for decisions.
There are no deadlines – an independent grants panel will meet four times a year and consider all applications received up to two weeks before the panel date. Panel dates for 2008 are 29th September and mid-November (exact date to be confirmed),
Can I get help with my application?
There are Guidance Notes to accompany the Application Form.
Please contact CITY.COMM if you need further advice or support with making an application.
What about the future of Grassroots Grants? How can the City’s business community get involved?
The Government is also inviting local businesses to get involved in Grassroots Grants through investing in the scheme’s innovative endowment match challenge.
Within the £130 million national programme, £50million has been set aside to match endowment investments from interested local businesses – offering them the chance to contribute directly to supporting and sustaining the communities in which they operate.
CITY.COMM and St Katharine & Shadwell Trust have been set an endowment fund target of £7,643 which we must reach in order to release the same amount again from the Government.
This endowment element – which is also open to individual investors – aims to ensure that that Grassroots Grants remain available for many years to come.
Remember that as Gift Aid can be claimed on donations to a charitable cause, a £1,000 match-funded contribution from a business would be worth £2,560 to the fund.
