Give with Care: campaign to tackle bogus charity collections
The government has launched a new campaign following high levels of complaints about leaflets distributed door-to-door which appeal for donations of clothes, shoes and other household items.

Whilst registered charities are responsible for the majority of charity collection bags and leaflets, some are delivered on behalf of commercial companies that cannot be identified from the leaflet's content.
Charities have registered their concern and public perception research, commissioned by the Office of the Third Sector, shows that the public also has concerns.
How can you help?
The "Give with Care" poster highlights four basic steps before you give:
1. Don’t stop giving
Donating your clothing and other goods to genuine charities helps to raise vital funds. Taking care when making your donation means that you can be sure that your help goes to those who really need it – and that charities don’t lose out.
2. Be aware
Unfortunately, anonymous ‘bogus’ collectors may try to exploit your generosity for their own gain, costing genuine charities at least £2 million a year. Print off the poster as a reminder for yourself and colleagues.
3. Be careful
Don’t be taken in. Read the small print. Know where your donation is going. Check contact details, as they might be false.
4. Check before you give:
- Ring the Charity Commission helpline (0845 300 0218) or visit their online register of charities (http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk) to see whether the name or number given belongs to a legitimate registered charity.
- Contact your local authority to check whether the collector has been licensed.
- Visit the ‘Watch out!’ section of the Consumer Direct website (http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk).
